While following a script isn’t exactly an innate nature for an emcee with roots in freestyle rap battles, it wasn’t a big surprise when Dumbfoundead showed up a little late for our interview. But that’s just how the 26-year-old from Koreatown L.A. rolls.
Dumb, born Jonathan Park, asserts that he always possessed an improv spirit and never make plans ahead of time. “I freestyle all the time with lyrics and stuff, but I also freestyle life.”
Dumb credits his living-in-the-moment attitude and willingness to try anything as the key to establishing the position he’s in today – recently wrapped up a sold-out four city Verizon APAHM Tour with pop sensation Viennie V and mega-star Jay Park.
We caught up with Dumbfoundead before the APAHM Concert in New York to discuss a wide range of topics from starting his own Hotbox Interview Series to his forays into acting.
What’s the last movie you saw and why?
I saw the Avengers because everybody sees that shit. It was Mother’s Day and I took my mom for her first 3D movie. I was laughing at her just tripping out on the movie.
What artists have you been listening to?
I’ve been listening to some hip-hop artists like A$AP Rocky. I listen to a lot of music from artists that I interview on the Hotbox Series.
When you’re in New York City, where do you like to hang out?
I bar hop…I don’t really remember the names. I’m more into lounges than clubs where a cool DJ is spinning some really cool music like some soul or funk and people are just kicking it and drinking.
What’s the most spontaneous thing you have ever done?
I do spontaneous shit all the time. That’s the freestyle spirit in me. I freestyle all the time with lyrics and stuff, but I also freestyle life. I don’t plan a lot of shit. I’ve always had that improv spirit. I think that’s how I came to this position.
Who is your celebrity crush?
I don’t know there so many hot celebrity females. Umm…I like Scarlett Johansson. There’s a bunch of K-Pop chicks that are cute. I don’t look at celebrities like they’re up there. I never feel like I’m out of there league.
